How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. A program appears under a subject only through a verified link (dedicated degree, major, concentration or documented pathway). A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About music education in Italy

How music education is organised

Advanced music training in Italy is split between two systems. Conservatori di musica and other AFAM institutions (Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale) award diplomi accademici of the first level (three years, 180 credits) and second level (two years, 120 credits), which the institutions themselves describe as equivalent to the university laurea and laurea magistrale. Universities award lauree in music-related fields such as musicology, taught in university departments rather than in conservatories. Each conservatory course (scuola) such as Pianoforte, Violino, Composizione or Jazz has its own study plan, so a conservatory usually lists dozens of separate courses rather than a single music degree with instrument pathways.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Italy. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Diploma accademico di primo livello (Triennio)
First-cycle AFAM diploma of 180 credits, entered through an admission exam; Italian conservatories describe it as equivalent to the university laurea triennale. Source
Diploma accademico di secondo livello (Biennio)
Second-cycle AFAM diploma of 120 credits, entered through an admission exam after a first-level diploma, laurea or equivalent; described as equivalent to the laurea magistrale. Source
Laurea (university)
University three-year degrees such as the Laurea in Musicologia at the University of Pavia (Cremona campus), 180 ECTS, admission by high-school diploma. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and qualification registers are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Ministero dell'Universita e della Ricerca (MUR) - AFAM
Ministry that authorises AFAM institutions and their academic diploma courses; conservatories state that their courses were authorised under Law 508/1999.

Credits and qualification framework

AFAM credits are described by the conservatories as aligned with the ECTS system; 60 credits correspond to a full-time year (Turin conservatory: one credit is 25 hours of student work).

No degree on this site guarantees admission, funding, employment, a visa or teacher registration, and nothing here is visa or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. it

Admissions and auditions. Admission to first- and second-level diploma courses is by an entrance exam (esame di ammissione) specific to each course, set by each conservatory, normally on top of a secondary-school diploma (first level) or a first-level diploma/laurea (second level). Repertoire and tests differ by instrument and school, so applicants should read the admission programme (programma di ammissione) published for the exact course and academic year. Some conservatories also require theory and ear-training level checks before the Triennio. Source
