Programs by award and subject in Austria

How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. A program appears under a subject only through a verified link (dedicated degree, major, concentration or documented pathway). A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About music education in Austria

How music education is organised

Advanced music study in Austria is concentrated in a small group of public arts universities (Vienna, Graz, Salzburg) and private universities (Linz, Vienna), which award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees within the national university system. Programmes are mostly entered through an institution-specific entrance or admission examination (Zulassungsprüfung) rather than by grades alone, and instruction is usually in German; some institutions also publish English-language materials and an English-taught doctorate.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Austria. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Bachelor and master degrees
Published programme pages at the institutions in this directory describe bachelor's programmes of 6 to 8 semesters (180 to 240 ECTS) awarding a Bachelor of Arts and master's programmes of 4 semesters (120 ECTS) awarding a Master of Arts; teaching qualifications may carry BEd/MEd awards. Source
Diplomstudium
Some long-cycle programmes are still offered as a ten-semester Diplomstudium (for example composition and music theory at mdw Vienna); the award is listed under its own name and is not relabelled as a bachelor's or master's degree. Source
Doctoral studies
Doctorates include scholarly doctorates (PhD) and artistic doctorates (Doctor artium / Dr.art.), usually six semesters; the artistic doctorate is kept separate from the scholarly PhD. Source

Credits and qualification framework

Programme pages state credits in ECTS credits; no equivalence with other national systems is claimed here.

No degree on this site guarantees admission, funding, employment, a visa or teacher registration, and nothing here is visa or credit-transfer advice.

Admissions and auditions. Admission usually requires an entrance examination in the principal study; published pages also mention proof of German knowledge for non-native speakers. Registration windows and exam dates are published per programme and academic year, so check the current programme page. Source
