Many music schools assess applicants in two stages: a recorded round that decides who is invited, then a live or virtual audition. Others hear everyone once, and some accept a recording instead of an audition. This guide explains the vocabulary and shows how official pages describe each stage. Terms are not standard across schools, so always read the school's own page.
The terms
- Prescreening (or pre-selection): a recorded submission reviewed before invitations to audition are issued. If you do not pass, you are not invited to the next round.
- Final or second-round audition: the live or virtual performance and, often, an interview or tests.
- Recorded audition: a recording that replaces the live audition for applicants who cannot attend.
- Hybrid: the school lets you choose a remote or live audition.
What the prescreen looks like in practice
The examples below show the range, not a rule.
- UC Irvine (B.Mus. in piano, strings and vocal arts): the prescreen is required of all B.Mus. applicants. It accepts unlisted YouTube links only, not audio-only files, asks you to state your name and repertoire at the start of each video, requires a separate link for each instrument, and says broken or inaccessible links are not considered. Deadline December 11, 2026; results by January 4, 2027; second-round schedule by January 11; in-person weekend January 30-31, 2027.
- Codarts Rotterdam (classical bachelor): pre-selection is a video portfolio of at least three recordings in contrasting styles by different composers, with no minimum or maximum length. You must be clearly visible; links to YouTube, Google Drive or Vimeo set to public are accepted, and CDs, DVDs and MP3s are not. Composition applicants instead submit up to three works with a description and motivation letter. The committee decides who is invited, and applicants are told by email.
- Cleveland Institute of Music: applications and prescreening videos are due December 1, 2026, with in-person auditions on four February 2027 dates. The page does not describe the video requirements beyond the deadline; they are on linked pages.
- Belmont University (graduate): applicants submit prescreening materials through Acceptd. For voice, instrument and piano that is a video of two pieces, a repertoire list and a resume; conducting, commercial music and music education applicants have different packages, and an interview follows for some. The page says edited or remastered recordings are grounds for automatic denial. It lists priority prescreening and audition dates and says applicants who use priority dates are considered for the initial round of scholarships.
When there is no prescreen
UW-Madison says that, with the exception of jazz, none of its instrument areas require prescreening materials, and that composition applicants do not audition but submit a portfolio. Its jazz applicants email sheet music for the audition pieces. Where no prescreen exists, you go directly to the audition date you choose; the same page explains how dates, applications and recommendation letters fit together. Read preparing for auditions for planning around those dates.
Recorded-only and virtual routes
A recording or a virtual audition can be the whole assessment, a first stage, or an option available only to some applicants.
- Cleveland Institute of Music says audition days can be virtual or in person, but DMA, Artist Diploma, collaborative piano and timpani and percussion applicants must audition in person in Cleveland.
- Codarts says Dutch residents must take the practical exam live in Rotterdam, while candidates abroad may choose Rotterdam or online via Teams, a choice made once in the application system. For its master's programmes the rules differ by genre: for example, jazz and global musics candidates living outside the Netherlands may choose an online audition, and orchestral and choral conducting auditions are held only in Rotterdam.
Ask whether a virtual or recorded route can affect scholarship consideration, accompaniment or ensemble placement. The pages above do not all say.
Questions to ask about any prescreen
- What exactly must be recorded: pieces, length, camera angle, number of takes?
- Is editing allowed? Belmont's page treats edited recordings as grounds for denial.
- Is the file format fixed (public video link, upload, audio)?
- When are results announced, and how: email, portal or both?
- If I pass, what happens next and can I choose live or virtual?
- Does the prescreen carry any fee or use a third-party platform?
If a page does not answer, ask admissions and keep the reply.
Practical tips from the requirements
- Test your links. UC Irvine states that inaccessible links are not considered. Open your submission while logged out of your own account.
- Label clearly. State your name and repertoire if the page asks for it.
- Check privacy settings. Codarts requires public links; others specify unlisted.
- Record early. Dates in the examples above fall in the autumn, and recommendation letters and application forms have their own deadlines.
- Keep copies. Note the date and what you submitted for each school.
Who sees what
Different schools use different people to review prescreens. Codarts says its admissions committee decides who is invited. UCLA's composition pages describe a faculty portfolio review before final interviews (see composition portfolios). Beyond what the pages state, the process behind a decision is not public, so avoid assuming a prescreen is only a formality or that it is a final judgement.
If you are not invited
Pages differ on what happens next. Codarts says qualified candidates may be placed on a waiting list and offered candidates must confirm within one month. Because places are limited, plan alternatives: apply to a range of schools using choosing a music school, and note that a different kind of programme, such as a certificate or diploma, may have separate admission rules.
Browse bachelor's programmes for school pages we have collected and see the methodology for how we handle audition information. Always confirm the current rules on the school's website.
